Beyond the Static Landscape
Beyond the Static Landscape is a pair of side-scrolling videos, depicting forest and desert landscapes. The forest video was inspired by the Boise National Forest and the Oregon coast. The desert video has a road trip quality, starting in Southern Idaho/Oregon and heading south to Mexico’s Chihuahua Desert. My research focused on native flora and geology. I was enchanted by the gradual shift between ecosystems that you observe while on a long drive. Each video has a simple composed ambient track to add to their immersion. My goal with these pieces was to take the depth of traditional landscapes further by using the parallax effect, commonly seen in animation and video games.
I started with no previous experience using these techniques. It was a long technical journey that took my final semester to figure out how to compose
2D illustrations in a way that would give the illusion of 3D depth.
